How to Use This Calculator
Enter your input values
Fill in all required input fields for the Brick Calculator. Most fields include unit selectors so you can work in your preferred unit system — metric or imperial, whichever matches your problem.
Review your inputs
Double-check that all values are correct and that you have selected the right units for each field. Incorrect units are the most common source of calculation errors and can produce results that are off by factors of 2, 10, or more.
Read the results
The Brick Calculator instantly computes the output and displays results with units clearly labeled. All calculations happen in your browser — no loading time and no data sent to a server.
Explore parameter sensitivity
Try adjusting individual input values to see how the output changes. This is a quick and effective way to develop intuition about how different parameters influence the result and to identify which inputs have the largest effect.

Variables: All variables and their units are labeled in the calculator interface above. Input fields accept values in multiple unit systems — select your preferred unit from the dropdown next to each field.
When to Use This Calculator
- •Use the Brick Calculator when you need accurate results quickly without the risk of manual computation errors or unit conversion mistakes.
- •Use it to verify calculations made by hand or in spreadsheets — an independent check can catch errors before they lead to costly decisions.
- •Use it to explore how changing input parameters affects the output — a quick way to develop intuition and identify the most influential variables.
- •Use it when collaborating with others to ensure everyone is working from the same numbers and applying the same assumptions.
About This Calculator
The Brick Calculator is a free, browser-based calculation tool for engineers, students, and technical professionals. It implements standard formulas and supports both metric (SI) and imperial unit systems with automatic unit conversion. All calculations are performed instantly in your browser with no data sent to a server. Use this calculator as a quick reference and sanity-check tool during design, analysis, and learning. Always verify results against primary engineering references and applicable standards for any safety-critical application.
About Brick Calculator
Planning a brick wall, veneer, or garden border requires knowing how many bricks to purchase. This calculator accounts for brick size, mortar joint thickness, and a waste factor for cuts and breakage. Standard modular bricks in the United States measure 3-5/8 inches wide by 2-1/4 inches tall by 7-5/8 inches long, but many other sizes exist. The mortar joint, typically 3/8 inch, adds to the effective coverage area of each brick. By dividing the total wall area by the area each brick covers (including mortar), you get an accurate count. Adding a waste percentage ensures you have enough material to handle inevitable breakage during transport and the cuts needed at corners, openings, and ends of courses.
The Math Behind It
Formula Reference
Bricks Needed
Wall Area / Brick Face Area x (1 + Waste%)
Variables: Brick face area includes mortar joint on length and height.
Worked Examples
Example 1: Garden Wall 20 ft long, 4 ft high
Wall Length = 20 ft, Wall Height = 4 ft, Brick = 8 in x 2.25 in, Mortar = 3/8 in, Waste = 5%
You need approximately 550 standard bricks.
Common Mistakes & Tips
- !Forgetting to include the mortar joint when calculating brick coverage area.
- !Using nominal brick dimensions instead of actual dimensions.
- !Not subtracting window and door openings from the total wall area.
- !Using too low a waste factor for projects with many cuts and corners.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many bricks are in a square foot?
With standard modular bricks (8 x 2-1/4 inches) and 3/8-inch mortar joints, you need approximately 6.5 to 7 bricks per square foot of wall face.
What waste factor should I use?
Use 5% for simple walls with few openings, 7-10% for walls with windows and doors, and up to 15% for complex patterns or curved walls.
