In 2019, the kilogram was redefined in terms of the Planck constant, making it traceable to fundamental physics rather than a single physical prototype.

In everyday speech 'weight' and 'mass' are used interchangeably, but in physics they differ — mass is the amount of matter, weight is the gravitational force on that matter. Bathroom scales report mass even though they measure the weight force. When working with recipes, weight-based measurements are more accurate than volume-based, especially for baking where ingredient density affects results.

Avoiding confusion between the troy ounce (used for precious metals, 31.1 g) and the avoirdupois ounce (used for everyday weights, 28.35 g) is critical in trading. Mixing up short tons (US, 2000 lb), long tons (UK, 2240 lb), and metric tons (1000 kg) causes significant errors in shipping and trade calculations. Pound-force and pound-mass are often confused in engineering — they are numerically equal at standard gravity but represent different physical quantities.

Shipping companies use weight conversions daily for international freight and customs. Chemists and pharmacists work with precise mass measurements for formulations. Fitness trainers and nutritionists use body weight and mass for personal goal-setting. Manufacturers verify incoming material weights against specifications. Agricultural producers weigh crops and livestock for trade and record-keeping.
