How to Use This Calculator

1

Enter your input values

Fill in all required input fields for the Roofing Calculator. Most fields include unit selectors so you can work in your preferred unit system — metric or imperial, whichever matches your problem.

2

Review your inputs

Double-check that all values are correct and that you have selected the right units for each field. Incorrect units are the most common source of calculation errors and can produce results that are off by factors of 2, 10, or more.

3

Read the results

The Roofing Calculator instantly computes the output and displays results with units clearly labeled. All calculations happen in your browser — no loading time and no data sent to a server.

4

Explore parameter sensitivity

Try adjusting individual input values to see how the output changes. This is a quick and effective way to develop intuition about how different parameters influence the result and to identify which inputs have the largest effect.

When to Use This Calculator

  • Use the Roofing Calculator when you need accurate results quickly without the risk of manual computation errors or unit conversion mistakes.
  • Use it to verify calculations made by hand or in spreadsheets — an independent check can catch errors before they lead to costly decisions.
  • Use it to explore how changing input parameters affects the output — a quick way to develop intuition and identify the most influential variables.
  • Use it when collaborating with others to ensure everyone is working from the same numbers and applying the same assumptions.

About This Calculator

The Roofing Calculator is a free, browser-based calculation tool for engineers, students, and technical professionals. About Roofing Calculator

Roofing materials are measured in 'squares,' where one square covers 100 square feet. This calculator determines how many squares and bundles of shingles your roof requires based on its overall dimensions and a waste factor. A standard gable roof has two rectangular planes, while hip roofs, dormers, and valleys add complexity. The waste factor accounts for ridge caps, hip ridges, valley cuts, and starter strips. For standard 3-tab asphalt shingles, three bundles make one square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles are heavier and may require 4 or 5 bundles per square depending on the manufacturer. Knowing your exact bundle count helps you order precisely and budget accurately for your re-roofing project.

The Math Behind It

Asphalt shingles are the most common residential roofing material in North America, covering approximately 80 percent of homes. They come in two main types: 3-tab shingles (flat, uniform appearance) and architectural/dimensional shingles (thicker, with a textured shadow line). A standard bundle of 3-tab shingles covers one-third of a square, so three bundles per square is the rule. Architectural shingle bundles are heavier and may cover less area, requiring 4 to 5 bundles per square. The roof area calculation depends on the roof geometry: for a simple gable, multiply the ridge length by the rafter (slope) length and multiply by two for both sides. For hip roofs, the calculation involves triangles and trapezoids. A pitch factor can also be used: measure the building footprint and multiply by a pitch factor based on the roof slope. The waste factor for a simple gable roof is typically 10 percent, increasing to 15 percent or more for complex roofs with hips, valleys, dormers, and skylights. In addition to shingles, you will need underlayment (felt paper or synthetic), drip edge flashing, ice and water shield in cold climates, ridge vent, and roofing nails.

Formula Reference

Roofing Squares

Squares = Roof Area / 100

Variables: One roofing square = 100 sq ft. Three bundles per square for standard 3-tab shingles.

Worked Examples

Example 1: Simple gable roof 40 x 20 ft each side

Ridge = 40 ft, Rafter = 20 ft, 2 sides, Waste = 10%

Step 1:Total area = 40 x 20 x 2 = 1,600 sq ft
Step 2:With 10% waste = 1,600 x 1.10 = 1,760 sq ft
Step 3:Squares = 1,760 / 100 = 17.6 squares
Step 4:Bundles = ceil(17.6 x 3) = 53 bundles

You need 17.6 squares or 53 bundles of 3-tab shingles.

Common Mistakes & Tips

  • !Measuring the building footprint instead of the actual sloped roof area.
  • !Using the wrong number of bundles per square for architectural shingles.
  • !Not adding extra material for ridge caps, starter strips, and valleys.
  • !Forgetting to budget for underlayment, flashing, and nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roofing square?

A roofing square is a unit of measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. It is the standard unit for ordering shingles and other roofing materials.

How many bundles per square?

For standard 3-tab shingles, 3 bundles cover one square. Architectural shingles are heavier and may require 4 to 5 bundles per square depending on the brand.
