About Uruguay Time (UYT)

Uruguay Time (UYT, IANA: America/Montevideo) is the official civil time of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, set at UTC-3:00 year-round. Uruguay abolished Daylight Saving Time in 2015 by Presidential Decree (Ley 19.348 of 2015), so UYT is observed without seasonal change since then. UYT serves Uruguay's approximately 3.5 million residents across 19 departments. Major cities: Montevideo (1.4M city, 2M metro — capital and only major city), Salto (105K), Ciudad de la Costa (95K), Paysandú (80K), Las Piedras (70K), Maldonado-Punta del Este (65K + seasonal). UYT is identical in offset to Argentina Time (ART) and Brasília Time (BRT), allowing simple coordination of MERCOSUR trade-bloc business hours and South American Pacto Andino diplomatic schedules. Affects: BVMBO Bolsa de Valores de Montevideo trading hours, Punta del Este resort + Pocitos beach tourism schedules, Uruguay grass-fed beef export shipping coordination, and the historic Carnaval de Montevideo's 40-night candombe parade schedule (the world's longest annual carnival).

About Atlantic Standard Time (AST)

Atlantic Standard Time (AST, IANA: America/Halifax, America/Puerto_Rico) is the time zone for the Canadian Maritime provinces and most of the Caribbean, set at UTC-4:00. AST is observed in: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Labrador (partially), Newfoundland's Labrador portion, eastern Quebec, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Bermuda, Anguilla, Antigua, Aruba, Barbados, British Virgin Islands, Curaçao, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela (since 2007). Canadian Maritime provinces observe AST in winter and switch to ADT = UTC-3:00 in summer per the Energy Policy Act-aligned Canadian schedule. The Caribbean territories (Puerto Rico, USVI, Bermuda) and US territories observe AST year-round without DST per their territorial governments. AST is the same offset as EDT (Eastern Daylight Time) during US summer months, so Halifax and New York are on the same clock in summer but Halifax is one hour ahead in winter.
