The Math Behind It

MPG is calculated by recording the odometer reading at each fill-up and dividing the distance traveled by the gallons pumped. For accurate measurement, fill the tank completely each time (to the auto-shutoff point) and record the gallons. The most reliable method uses the tank-to-tank approach over several fill-ups and averages the results. US MPG and imperial MPG differ because a US gallon (3.785 liters) is smaller than an imperial gallon (4.546 liters), so the same car will have a higher imperial MPG number. The metric system uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km), which is an inverse measure: lower is better. The conversion is L/100km = 235.215 / MPG. Fuel efficiency standards have driven significant improvements: the US CAFE standard requires automaker fleet averages of approximately 40 MPG by 2026. Real-world MPG is typically 10-20% below EPA ratings because EPA testing uses controlled laboratory conditions that do not capture aggressive driving, extreme temperatures, or heavy loads.
