The Math Behind It

Theoretical yield is calculated from the balanced equation and the amount of limiting reagent: convert the limiting reagent mass to moles, use the stoichiometric ratio to find moles of product, then convert product moles to grams using its molar mass. The actual yield is the mass of purified product you weigh at the end of the experiment. Percent yield = (actual/theoretical) × 100.
