Kelvin (K)

The SI base unit of thermodynamic temperature. Zero kelvin is absolute zero. Since 2019 it has been defined by fixing the Boltzmann constant.

Degree Celsius (°C)

A scale offset from kelvin so that zero sits at the freezing point of water. T(°C) = T(K) − 273.15 exactly.

Key Differences

  • 1The degree is the SAME SIZE in both scales. A rise of 1 K is a rise of 1 °C. Only the zero point differs, by exactly 273.15.
  • 2Kelvin takes no degree symbol and no word degree: write 300 K, not 300 °K. Celsius takes both: 27 °C.
  • 3A temperature DIFFERENCE is identical in either scale, so heat-transfer calculations that use only differences give the same answer in both. That is why Fourier's law and Newton's law of cooling can be worked in Celsius without error.
  • 4Anywhere temperature appears as an absolute quantity — ideal gas law, Stefan-Boltzmann radiation, Carnot efficiency — kelvin is mandatory. Using Celsius there produces nonsense, including negative absolute temperatures.
  • 5The Stefan-Boltzmann law is the classic trap: radiated power goes as T to the fourth power, and T must be absolute. Substituting Celsius does not merely shift the answer, it changes it by orders of magnitude.

Background

William Thomson, later Lord Kelvin, proposed an absolute scale in 1848 on the reasoning that there must be a lowest possible temperature at which no more heat can be extracted. Anders Celsius had published his scale a century earlier, and — a detail that surprises people — his original version ran backwards, with 0 at boiling and 100 at freezing. It was inverted shortly after his death. The 2019 SI redefinition severed the kelvin from any material property, including water, by fixing the Boltzmann constant instead.

Use Kelvin (K) when…

Use kelvin whenever temperature enters a formula as an absolute value — gas laws, radiation, thermodynamic cycles, efficiency calculations — and in any scientific reporting of low temperatures.

Use Degree Celsius (°C) when…

Use Celsius for weather, cooking, everyday reporting, and engineering work that depends only on temperature differences. Convert to kelvin the moment an absolute temperature is required.
