The troy ounce survives in the precious metals market to this day, which is why gold is quoted in a unit heavier than the ounce used for food.

Use kilograms for anything scientific, medical dosing, international trade, and any calculation where mass and force must be kept distinct. SI makes that distinction structurally: mass in kg, force in newtons.
