Belarusian Ruble (Br)

The Belarusian Ruble (BYN, ISO 4217 code 933, symbol Br or Br.) is the official currency of the Republic of Belarus, issued by the National Bank of the Republic of Belarus (NBRB, est. 1990). Subdivided into 100 kapeykas. Banknotes: Br5, Br10, Br20, Br50, Br100, Br200, Br500 (the highest denomination); coins: 1 kapeyka, 2 kapeykas, 5 kapeykas, 10 kapeykas, 20 kapeykas, 50 kapeykas, Br1, Br2. Belarus redenominated its currency on July 1, 2016 at 1 new ruble (BYN) = 10,000 old rubles (BYR) — reducing nominal values that had grown massive from 1990s-2010s inflation. The previous redenomination was 2000 at 1 new = 1,000 old. Belarus is closely economically aligned with Russia — a 1999 Union Treaty creates the Union State of Russia and Belarus though it has not progressed to formal political union. Following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine (with Belarus serving as a launching platform for Russian forces toward Kyiv), Belarus faces extensive Western sanctions targeting major banks, defense industry (BelOMO, BelAZ, Integral, etc.), and President Alexander Lukashenko personally.
