What is a Bode plot?

A Bode plot is a two-part graph showing magnitude and phase of a transfer function vs frequency. The x-axis is frequency on a log scale (decades). The magnitude is plotted in decibels (20·log₁₀|G|) vs log frequency; the phase is in degrees vs log frequency. Bode plots reveal system bandwidth, resonances, stability margins, and other key characteristics at a glance.

What's a gain margin?

Gain margin (GM) is the factor by which the open-loop gain can increase before the closed-loop system becomes unstable. Measured at the frequency where the phase crosses −180°: GM = 1/|G(jω_180)| or equivalently GM_dB = −20·log₁₀|G(jω_180)|. A gain margin of 10 dB means you could double the open-loop gain (20·log₁₀(2) ≈ 6 dB) and still have 4 dB of margin before instability. Typical design targets are > 6 dB.

What's a phase margin?

Phase margin (PM) is the additional phase lag that would cause the closed-loop system to be marginally stable. Bandwidth is the frequency at which the closed-loop magnitude drops 3 dB below the DC gain (a factor of 0.707 in amplitude). Higher bandwidth means the system can track faster input changes and reject higher-frequency disturbances. However, high bandwidth also amplifies measurement noise. Design trades bandwidth for noise rejection and robustness.

How does a pole appear on a Bode plot?

A pole at corner frequency ω_p adds a −20 dB/decade rolloff to the magnitude asymptote beginning at ω_p. The phase starts to decrease at about 0.1·ω_p, reaches −45° at ω_p, and approaches −90° at 10·ω_p. A zero has the opposite effect: +20 dB/decade slope and +90° phase contribution. Complex pole pairs show resonance peaks at ω_n = √(k/m) for underdamped systems.
