Unlike BMR alone, TDEE accounts for how active you are, making it the practical target for daily calorie intake.

The Math Behind It

Total daily energy expenditure consists of four components: 1. **Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)**: 60-75% of TDEE. Energy for vital functions at rest. 2. **Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)**: 8-10% of TDEE. Energy used to digest, absorb, and metabolize food. Protein has the highest TEF (20-30%), carbohydrates are intermediate (5-10%), and fat is lowest (0-3%). 3. **Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT)**: 5-30% of TDEE. Calories burned during intentional exercise. 4. **Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)**: 15-50% of TDEE. Calories burned during daily activities like walking, fidgeting, standing, and maintaining posture. NEAT varies enormously between individuals (up to 2,000 kcal/day difference). Activity multipliers estimate EAT + NEAT combined, since most people can't separate them. The 1.2-1.9 range captures typical variation from completely sedentary to extremely active lifestyles. A key insight: NEAT can change significantly with environmental factors. When calorie-restricted, people unconsciously move less. When overfed, some people unconsciously fidget more. This 'adaptive thermogenesis' explains why weight loss and gain are harder than simple math suggests.
