Celsius (°C)

Fahrenheit (°F)

The temperature scale used in the United States for everyday weather and cooking. Water freezes at 32°F and boils at 212°F. The scale was developed by Daniel Fahrenheit in the early 1700s, calibrated to the freezing point of brine and normal human body temperature.

Key Differences

  • 1Celsius is the international standard (ISO) and is used in all countries except the US for everyday temperatures, plus all scientific and engineering disciplines worldwide. Meteorological organizations and international media always report in Celsius.
  • 2Fahrenheit provides slightly finer granularity for typical human comfort temperatures: the range 0–100°F covers most everyday weather conditions (from very cold winter to extreme summer heat), whereas the equivalent Celsius range is approximately −18°C to 38°C.
  • 3Conversion formula: °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32, and °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. The two scales intersect at exactly −40° (−40°C = −40°F).
  • 4Kelvin (K) is the absolute temperature scale used in thermodynamics and physics. 0 K = −273.15°C = absolute zero. Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius — just shifted so that 0 K is absolute zero.
  • 5Body temperature: 37°C = 98.6°F is average human body temperature. A high fever is above 38°C (100.4°F). Thermometers sold in the US often show both scales.

Background

Anders Celsius proposed his scale in 1742, originally with 0 as boiling and 100 as freezing. It was later reversed to its current form. Daniel Fahrenheit developed his scale in 1724. The Celsius scale was formally adopted as part of the International System of Units (SI) and is used globally in science and most of daily life.
